Spot the Difference…..

Music video director extraordinaire Ray Kay (not his real name. Fact. He is Norwegian. Also a fact) has directed some of the biggest promos around – the amazing Pokerface for Lady Gaga and some Beyonce song I’ve never heard of…..aaaaaaanyway, he’s got around 100 music videos to his name but it seems he’s running out of ideas as this year he has directed this video by American singer Amerie:
And we couldn’t help notice the striking similarities between this and the much hyped new video to launch The Nation’s Sweetheart Cheryl Cole’s solo career. Both videos consist of prancing around in front of a blue screen displaying a graffiti wall, with the name of the respective song – which was never the most inspired narrative for a music video at the best of times – let alone a few months apart by the same director! Shoddy. This is obviously where i would have embedded said Cheryl Cole video but the ’embed option’ is not available so watch it here to make your comparisons.

Dance Inspiration

She-Wolf, the new video by Shakira…..where to start with this new amazing piece of work ??! Well, probably with the ONE-LEGGED CUTOUT CATSUIT, first seen when she’s performing inside a giant-size replica of the human stomach but knowing that not much else is gonna compare to such a fashion statement, used shamelessly in a second scene, the obligatory dancing in a night club one.
She does manage to sneak in the Michael Jackson Smooth Criminal gravity defying lean at one point too, although she is cracking out moves here that Jacko would never have dared to attempt. The video does have some Thriller undertones and does look like it’s supposed to be an 80’S homage video – but I have a sneaking suspicion it is nothing of the sort and in fact is just really rubbish but DEFINITELY crossing into the so-crap-its-brilliant category.

Anyway, all this is cut with the ‘sexy’ cage dancing scenes, where Shakira might well look like she’s naked but when you look like you’re possessed by a particularly rubbish stripper it goes from a titillating segment to pure comedy perfection.
And just when you thought this couldn’t get any better it cuts to her dancing in front of a picture – picture – of a New York skyline, displaying a dance routine we have not seen the likes of since you made up ones with your friends in the school playground.

She may use unorthodox moves but she sure is bendy. Basically, this is the best video that doesn’t feature my arm, that I’ve seen in a long time. IT’S COMEDY GENIUS.

Peter Andre – Behind Closed Doors

“Behind Closed Doors” – Peter Andre. Music Video directed by FauxTales (Stephen Lally & Simon Allen) from FauxTales on Vimeo.

Here it is!! The aforementioned Andre video directed by the super-talented FauxTales! Luckily my pic made the papers as it is in fact only my arm that makes its music video debut here. Roberto gets a full frontal though, amazing!

Taking it’s inspiration from 70’s fashion photography and 80’s Duran Duran style videos, not that I’m being biased, but this is a fantastic direction for newly single Andre to take his image. As for the video narrative, models who are perfect on the outside and evil on the inside….. hhhmmm, so what does go on BEHIND CLOSED DOORS?? You’re never gonna know.
Or probs just gonna have to wait for the magazine deal….

Paparazzi by Lady Gaga

This is for you Robert…
It has been a while since an artist has embraced the music video and exploited it to its full mini-movie potential. For that reason – and the brilliant styling – I love this.
